The importance of feminist theory in the field
of international relations
Feminist theory has a pivotal role in the field of
social interactions: It is an interdisciplinary and constitutive theory, and it focuses, on
the position of women in society and last but not least, it helps to diminish the
phenomenon of gender discrimination.
In this regard, feminist International Relations
theories emerged in the late 1980s as a response to women dissatisfaction about
the men-centric concepts spread through the domains of IR.
Feminist scholars revealed how traditional concepts
and practices of the state excluded or marginalized women, both empirically and
conceptually.
The submission of women’s role and a shrunk vision on
the potentials of women in society lead to a series of consequences which can
threaten everyone.
Firstly, inequalities in the domain of gender can
provoke a ripple-effect, causing a broader phenomenon of discrimination which
embraces the race, the sexual orientation and the social status; thus, everyone
could be potentially marginalized.
Secondly, analyzing this issue from an internal
nation’s point of view, women submission leads to social disorders; at a global
governance’s level, gender inequalities may cause conflicts and, in the worst of cases,
wars.
Furthermore, feminist perspectives offer alternative
frameworks for conflict resolution and peacebuilding, other than international
topics which deserve a broader vision of things, and not only a masculine point
of view.
In conclusion, feminist theory has a key role in the field of IR: it promotes inclusivity, helps to maintain peaceful state in societies and in International Relations. Finally, it offers a wider vision for understanding and addressing global challenges.
