Ci siamo.

The State of Things – 2026 - Report

Here we are. As our readers know, in August _TeclaXXI_ takes a one-month break, and on the eve of suspending publication, I, as its editor, am conducting a provisional review.

Just as a ship’s captain takes a bearing at dawn to know exactly where he is in the middle of the sea, this piece is meant to take stock of the year and understand how far we have come on the journey. This is the third time we have undertaken such an exercise, because _TeclaXXI_ is now in its third year. Many probably saw me as a dreamer, a fantasist, or – to borrow from _Caro Diario_ that famous line by Jennifer Beals to Nanni Moretti, who had stopped her on the street to ask if it was really her – I too was a fool, indeed "almost a fool".

Therefore, out of intellectual honesty, I was never offended by a refusal to collaborate on this project. If Don Abbondio was right when, in response to Cardinal Borromeo’s final rebukes, he said the famous line “courage: if one does not have it, one cannot give it to oneself,” this applies all the more to those who lack the audacity, let alone the brazen recklessness, to embark on a somewhat crazy enterprise that isn’t even justified in terms of economic gain. And since our time is dominated by market logic, the purpose of creating a non-profit enterprise – that is, one without profit motives – disqualified us from the start in the eyes, if not of everyone, certainly of the majority of our interlocutors.

But, despite all these pessimistic considerations, our magazine was founded in January 2024 and has since been published regularly, with at least four contributions every week. Today it has an archive of 500 issues, all of which remain available and accessible. As a result, the list of people who have collaborated with _TeclaXXI_ has grown to 90. Each of them freely chose the subject to cover and the way to do it. In fact, we have received contributions in written, video, audio, photographic, and musical forms. Aware that we exist on the web and can therefore reach far and into other geo-linguistic contexts, we have hosted contributions not only in Italian, but also in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and more. Today, the number of regular readers has exceeded 250, while about 600 follow us on Facebook and around a hundred on Instagram. From the statistical feedback we receive regularly, we discover that we have readers and contacts scattered across planet Earth, beyond the Atlantic Ocean and even in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

It is a considerable source of pride that comforts us, and for which we are grateful to our audience. But we believe it would be wrong to rest on it as if it were a goal achieved. Also because we must recognize that the encouraging outcome of our cultural work with respect to the audience that follows us is not due solely to the quality of our offering and to the striking graphic design that characterizes it and is appreciated by all. We know that we owe it above all to the technology we use, which not only allows us to spread our message and reach an audience unimaginable for a print magazine, but also enables us to offer the public a magazine of an amphibious nature – that is, both multimedia and multilingual.

I would like to emphasize this second aspect. From the very beginning we tried to express ourselves not only in Italian, but also to host contributions in other languages. Of course, we couldn’t imagine that all our readers were polyglots and cosmopolitan, but thanks to the option we provide, marked with the word TRANSLATE, we allow everyone to select a passage and, by copying it into the indicated field, choose to have it translated. This is the clearest example of our relationship with the time and the world in which we live and which we must face.

In fact, while we are open to all generations of humans who recognize themselves in the life program with which Dante’s Ulysses convinces his companions to follow him in the enterprise of going beyond the Pillars of Hercules (“You were not made to live like brutes, / but to pursue virtue and knowledge,” _Inferno_, Canto XXVI, vv. 119-120), it is well known that the founding core of _TeclaXXI_ is made up of men and women who belong to the 20th century – that is, who were formed before the apocalypse of our times: the digital revolution, followed by the even more disruptive advent of Artificial Intelligence.

The 21st is not just a new century, but the beginning of a new civilization. Forget “the end of the Gutenberg galaxy”! Here the stakes have become something else. Aside from the looming risks of climate change and nuclear wars, will we also have to ask ourselves about the survival of the human species as the dominant species on our planet? In short, have we reached the end of the Anthropocene? And as for us, the boomers born in the 20th century – indeed in its Golden Age (1946–1964) – is all that is left for us to appear on stage? If we really were what we thought we were, the best youth of the last century, should we organize a mass seppuku à la Yukio Mishima? But since epic choices do not belong to us Italians, our national motto being “I’ve got a family to think about” (_Flaiano docet_), our fate is marked in more modest and decidedly pathetic terms. We boomers, too inconsistent and gutless for a collective hara-kiri, will inevitably end up as _umarells_ of the cultural debate: with the helmet of nostalgia on our heads, we are condemned to play the role of _laudatores temporis acti_ in front of the construction sites of History.

From its founding manifesto, _TeclaXXI_ has pointed to a different path – what we once would have called a third way. It is possible to keep together the desire for knowledge and critical thinking inherited from the 20th century, while combining them with the extraordinary opportunities offered by today’s technology. It is therefore completely useless to criminalize or even demonize the epochal transition we are going through at this juncture. Personally, I could not add anything to the words used by Leo XIV in his encyclical _Magnifica humanitas_. The Pope states that AI must be disarmed – that is, removed from the logic of power (war and domination) – and put at the service of justice, work, and truth.

In other words, AI – like any technological invention since the discovery of fire, not to mention the wheel, writing, and electricity – is not neutral. On the contrary, it is an extremely powerful tool, therefore virtually capable of lethal effects for the entire human race. If we leave it in the hands of a few, it will destroy us all. If instead we use it to love and not to dominate, it will remain human and will give us great help. As a man of faith, Leo XIV poses an alternative to us using biblical images: either we build Babel, or we rebuild Jerusalem.

Naturally, the cultural horizon in which we at _TeclaXXI_ operate does not have the same millennial perspective. Our field of action is much earthlier and more limited. Just as our goal is: to create a community of humans united by the same intellectual curiosity for everything that surrounds us, because – to take up our acronym – everything expresses culture, literature, art. The world always does so in its entirety. But what is the world? For us, the first of the seven propositions of the _Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus_ (1921) still holds: _Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist (The world is all that is the case). Wittgenstein’s starting point introduces the dimension of temporality of everything we find in the world.

Reality is made up of phenomena that are born and die in a continuous cycle. In the past we would have called it the historicity of all phenomena, including ourselves, alluding to the fact that everything has a beginning and an end. But then other _Weltanschauungen_ attracted us, complicating our ontological position. As for me, I think of the great modern poets – from Leopardi’s La Ginestra_ to Rilke’s _Duino Elegies_ with his Vergänglichkeit, that is, the transience of all things. And even 20th-century science ended up shaking the paradigm of modern man: as if field theory weren’t enough, entropy came along as the essence of the second law of thermodynamics. If we hoped that the age of chaos into which the part of the planet we inhabit has fallen could inevitably pass, we would be naive, since disorder is the habitual state of the world and is therefore destined to increase in the future. Finally, the death blow to any residual confidence in working, if not _für Ewig, at least in the medium and long term, was delivered by the theory of impermanence, according to which everything happens and then passes. Ultimately, it is the thesis of one of Borges’ most famous poems, _El Recuerdo_ (1964): Nada se edifica sobre la piedra / Todo  sobre la arena_. However original Borges’ formulation may be as great poetry, his thought echoes a vast intertextual network, going back to Heraclitus and even further, in time and space – the imprint of older Eastern traditions such as Buddhism and Taoism is evident. I note that my quote from Borges was not complete, because the text continues and then concludes with these lines: _nuestro deber es edificar sobre / la arena y. sin embargo edificar_. This is the meaning of _TeclaXXI.

We have known from the beginning that our magazine will have a duration that will sooner or later come to an end, but our duty has called us to build on sand as if it were rock. The end is not in our plans, just as it isn’t for anyone, but when it comes, we will accept it serenely, finding inspiration in Leopardi’s broom plant (_la ginestra_) and bowing our heads under the _fascio mortal_. And then we will allow ourselves one last remark: “damn! It was really worth it.”
